Company Research
Origins of Kinetic Singapore It was first established as an interactive design agency in 1999 as a part of the Ad Planet group, which was the largest locally owned advertising company in Singapore. The team at Kinetic Singapore soon attracted attention from everywhere and even won a string of local and international awards. Kinetic Singapore was the only interactive agency in the world to receive two Gold awards at the 'One Show' in 2001. That same year, a Design & Advertising arm was added to the company and the company continued to gardenr a good share of clients and awards. Philosophy Kinetic Singapore's philosophy is basically to banish bad advertising and design and free humans from 'bad ads and ho-hum websites'. They have a mindset in which websites should be designed differently, with a bit of thought and a dash of flair and that advertisements should be thought-provoking, inventive and entertaining at the same time. However, they do regard sending the key message across to the clients, not compromising the brand and prioritise the interests of their clients as important as well. They aim to extend their ideas across platforms for an integrated communications solution and still stop people in their tracks. Goals To give their very best. To dream the impossible. To let their passion drive them! Some of Awards Won : 1. British D&AD awards ( 2000 ) 2. Singapore Creative Circle Awards ( 2000 ) 3. Singapore Hall of Fame Awards ( Institute of Advertising ) 4. One Show Design, New York - Gold Recognition : 1. Top performing Asian Agency at the One Show ( 2005 ) 2. Work featured in Creative Review 3. Work featured on Taschen's Icons series 'Web Design : Studios' Crew : 1. One of their staff will be a judge for One Shoe Interactive in New York City 2. One of their staff will be one of the judges for D&AD Packaging category. 3. One of their staff will be one of the judges for D&AD Global Awards category. Sunday, January 11, 2009, 8:20 AM
Cover Letter
Application for internship position in Kinetic Singapore ( Design & Advertising ) Dear Sir / Madam, I am a student in Temasek Design School pursuing a diploma in Visual Communication and am interested to intern under the Advertising & Design arm of Kinetic Singapore. Kinetic Singapore strikes me as a firm which creates brilliant design pieces that do not conform to ‘design rules’. Your featured works and website are eye-catching, entertaining and very impressive. I continually seek exposure to the design world, with keen and strong interest in graphic design, advertising and typography. My design philosophies are largely similar to the firm’s. I do not believe in having a fixed formula to create design pieces, but instead, love to explore with different mediums and methods to create influencial and attractive pieces that turn heads but at the same time, convey the right message to the intended audience. I believe that awarding me an internship position in Kinetic Singapore will be mutually beneficial. I am a team player but can work independently too. Also, I am able to work under pressure and reach deadlines. Although I do not have ample exposure to the design industry, I am willing to learn and adapt. I look forward to discussing with you this exciting opportunity to be interning under Kinetic Singapore. Please find below my resume and portfolio. Please feel free to contact me at +6596664923 or imeeafl@gmail.com at your convenience. Thank you for your time and consideration. Labels: Cover Letter Saturday, January 10, 2009, 8:53 AM

My Design Philosophy
Simplicity. Spunky. Sui Generis. Significant. Speak. Simplicity, I believe, does not equate to ‘boring’. Complicated design pieces may instead distract the audience of the intended message and focus. In my opinion, designers have to be daring and determined, thus ‘spunky’ being one of my design philosophy. Confidence in our works are important, as well as being adventurous enough to experiment with different mediums and style, in other words, explore! However, designers should have a style of their own, in which they can express and communicate their thoughts, emotions and ideas best to their audience. Sui Generis is a latin word which means ‘unique’ and having a exclusive style will distinct you from all the others. A designer’s works have to be significant to himself and also the viewers. This is an important aspect of being effective in communicating visually.Last but not least, I truly believe that designers must speak through their design pieces to their audience clearly graphically and within a short time span. “ If a poster is unable to convey its message to the reader in 10 seconds, its designer has failed.” True, indeed. Reflection
My portfolio represent my potential as a design student who is passionate about creating effective and attractive visual communication. Also, it shows the multi-disciplinary aspects of design that I am acquiring and interested in. Last but not least, it shows my style of approach to design, in addition to my design philosophies. I believe my portfolio is just a stepping stone to something greater in the future as I advance in my learning journey as a visual communicator. How have you organized your portfolio and why? I have organized my portfolio in accordance of the discipline of design. Though I have learnt the basics of various type of design such as Typography, Layout, Illustration, Packaging, I have placed emphasis on Graphic Design with relation to mostly posters. Which artifacts best represent your: Growth over time? Your strengths as a designer? In my opinion, the typography and layout pieces that I have put together best represent my growth over time. Typography & Layout is a wide aspect of design which is wide and difficult to grasp. A lot of effort, research, thinking and determination were put into these pieces to bring them to perfection and satisfaction. My strengths as a designer are shown in the posters that I have designed. I started designing posters in my free time since Lower Secondary and have become a hobby ever since, thus I have learnt, developed and experimented with poster designs. My on-going challenges in design are: Illustration has always been a challenge for me as I have never tried still-life drawing nor drawing per se before I entered Temasek Design School. Packaging is a new aspect of design for me and it sparked off excitement the designer in me when I was tasked to revamp a package. As a whole, I am restricted in my creativity and am not daring enough to experiment. How have you rated your reflections and your portfolio (1- Below expectations; 2 – Meeting expectations; 3 – Above expectation? 2. I think my portfolio is not satisfying as its content is inadequate. However, I think I have put in a lot of efforts and thoughts into organizing my portfolio. How can you improve your portfolio? What computer skills do you need to improve at this time? I can improve my portfolio by organizing it more neatly and adding in more visual elements and improving on my cover letter and having a clearer workflow of the cover letter, resume and design philosophy. I need to explore Adobe Photoshop and Adole Illustrator to fully utilise it before moving on to new programmes like Freehand. |
